BAYAN-Canada condemns the merciless murder of longtime peace advocate and peasant organizer Randall “Ka Randy” Echanis and the occupant of a nearby residential unit Louie Tagapia. We demand swift justice for Ka Randy! We demand justice for victims of extrajudicial killings.
On August 10th, Ka Randy, who was undergoing medical treatment in his Quezon City residence, was brutally killed by the Philippine National Police. Ka Randy was the national secretary-general of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (Peasant Movement of the Philippines.) He was known for leading causes for substantive reforms in the agriculture sector, and credited for his work in helping craft the the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill.
Ka Randy’s death was not in vain. And his murder only made him a martyr, a lifeblood into the veins of Philippine society. He was one with the basic masses who constantly remind us the significance of linking agrarian revolution in our politics of antifascism and anti-imperialism. He fell into the hands of state forces because he took the steps in pushing for genuine agrarian reform and national industrialization to break all forms of exploitation, oppression and structural violence.
Ka Randy’s name is now in the pantheon of the countless land and rights defenders who dedicated their lives to pursuing just and lasting peace in the Philippines. BAYAN-Canada honors their memory by continuing to boldly struggle to end the U.S.-Duterte regime’s tyranny and terror, and to advance the mass movement for national democracy with a socialist perspective.
